Which is more dangerous an Earthquake or a Volcano?

Using the knowledge you have learned and evidence you can find to support your cause/opinion, write and post a well written paragraph(8 sentence minimum) stating your view on this topic. Be prepared to answer questions and cite evidence to support your thinking. Remember that you must use evidence to support your claim and also post the links (2) to your evidence so it can be verified by your peers. Finally, you must respond to any questions asked of you and post a comment of support, ask for clarification or disqualify with evidence (2) of your peers postings.

I think that earthquakes are more dangerous that volcanoes are. When earthquakes happen they can cause many things to happen afterward resulting in destruction. They can cause by shaking tsunamis, and landslides. Earthquakes can also be the cause to some volcanic eruptions. They will shake the ground so much that it messes with the volcano causing it to erupted before anyone could be warned, meaning that more lives could be in danger. Earthquakes can also be very destructive on their own. They can happen in a very populated area with lots of people and big building. If one of those buildings are not up to standards on safety, it could fall and possibly kill many of lives. Both are very destructive but i think that earthquakes are much more dangerous.

I think you should reconsider because volcanoes can cause miles and miles of destruction. The destruction is caused by the very fast moving lava flow. Also an earthquake can be tracked, but a volcano is all tracked by educated guesses. So all I am saying is just to reconsider your opinion.

I think that earthquakes are worse because they make the ground shake and its all over the world its in one place. they are both every bad in there own way but i think that earthquakes are worse. Earthquakes can happen any where in this world, but when a volcano er-ups it wont be as bad. And volcanoes only happen in tropical places like Hawaii its really bad down there and im sure they would have a different say about this . why i think their worse then volcanoes is because an earthquake hits it shakes the ground and buildings and bridges fall down and kill people. Not saying that volcanos don't do the same thing they just don't hurt as many people as earthquakes do.Even though they are both bad earthquakes are worse in its own way. So they are both bad and yes they both kill people but earthquakes are more sever than volcanos.

I disagree with levi because volcanoes destroy and kill earthquakes there is still a chance in living unlike volcanoes if you get caught in a volcano there is no chance in living cause you would melt and any material it touched with burn and cannot be repaired

I think that earthquakes are more dangerous. They can destroy miles upon miles of land. Volcanoes do not do that much damage maybe a couple of miles. In 1906 a earthquake destroyed 375,000 square miles. After that earthquake 400,000 were homeless. If the earthquake is large enough then it can cause a tsunami. A tsunami can damage more land than a volcano and earthquake combined.Earthquakes can be different sizes and do many different things.

In my opinion, earthquakes are a lot more dangerous than volcanoes. One reason I believe this is because you can predict volcanoes, but it’s very difficult to predict earthquakes. This website; http://www.geo.mtu.edu/UPSeis/hazards.html states , ¨Building can be damaged by the shaking itself or by the ground beneath them settling to a different level than it was before the earthquake.¨From that information you can tell that there are more than 1 way that earthquakes can be destructive towards buildings.¨Earthquakes can cause dam walls to crack and eventually collaspem sending raging waters into surrounding areas and causing severe flooding¨ from this website ; http://www.uwiseismic.com/General.aspx?id=14 . This is another way that earthquakes can be hazardous to the earth.

I agree with callista because its true, it is harder to predict earthquakes than it volcanoes. We get more of a heads up with volcanoes and have at least a little bit of time to get out of that area.

Side: Earthquakes

As Callista states in the second sentence, volcanoes can be easier to detect earlier whereas earthquakes strike unanimously and the consequences are quick. In the amount of time a volcano erupts and flows, two earthquakes could devastate entire towns, killing thousands at a time. In her second reference she quotes that dam walls could crack which could affect not only the city or town the earthquake happened in, but the surrounding cities as well.

I disagree with Callista because volcanoes may be predicted, but that doesn't stop anything. Volcanoes release very harmful gases and other substances like lava. This can not only be destructive to taking down buildings and towns, but also people can't live with some of the gases given from volcanoes.

Some Earthquakes can cause a volcano to erupt without anybody knowing. Earthquakes can also destroy miles of land. In 1906 an earthquake destroyed 375,000 square miles. I have read most of the comments on both sides of the debate.

I believe that earthquakes are more deadly. volcanoes need an earthquakes to erupt. Without earthquakes we would not know about the magma pass ways, and the volcano's structure.you may find it at this site http://volcano.oregonstate.edu/how-are-volcanoes-and-earthquakes-related

Side: Earthquakes

I think earthquakes are more dangerous because a volcano can happen in only certian places and we have a choice to live near it or not, but earthquakes can happen anywhere and we can't tell when. Volcanoes are very deadly but you are warned sooner then when a earthquake happens you arent warned soon enough. Earthquakes can also happen at the bottom of the sea. Which cause massive waves called a tsunami. A tsunami destories everything in its path much like a volcano but a tsunami is just a part of a earthquake. Earthquakes destroy building with people in them and kill thousands of people a year! (I have got all my information from http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/14649717 .)

Side: Earthquakes

I believe that earthquakes are more dangerous than volcanoes. Although they are both dangerous, which do you hear about more? Earthquakes are a lot more likely to happen and in more areas than volcanoes. Earthquakes also cause a chain reaction. For example, after an earthquakes cause seismic waves that can also cause volcanic eruptions. (source: https://msnucleus.org/membership/html/k-6/pt/hazards/5/pth5_1a.html ) Earthquakes can wipe out large cities in a matter of minutes. In 1976, an earthquake killed over 650,000 people. It lasted less than a minute. (source: http://www.eduplace.com/kids/sla/6/volcanoes.html ) Volcanoes and earthquakes are both dangers to us, but I think we have more to worry about with earthquakes.

Side: Earthquakes
3 points

I think that earthquakes are more dangerous and cause more damage than a volcano. Volcanoes are dangerous but in my opinion, they are not as bad as an earthquake. Earthquakes can cause tsunamis and landslides and can range from not bad to natural disaster. Histories worst volcano eruption is 92,000 deaths, while the worst earthquake to be recorded caused 830,000 deaths. Earthquakes normally happen only around fault lines. There are a lot more fault lines than volcanoes. That means there is a better chance than an earthquake than a volcano.

Side: Earthquakes

I agree with Max, Earthquakes has killed many more people than volcanoes have. Each year on average, earthquakes kill 15 times more people than volcanoes do

Side: Earthquakes
3 points

Which is more dangerous to you, an earthquake or a volcano? I am going to tell you what I think about this question. I think that earthquakes are more dangerous than volcanoes.

I think they are more dangerous because there were almost 100 significant earthquakes last year. There are not near as many significant volcanic eruptions in the past year. Volcanoes can be more devastating, however because they do not occur as often I do not think they are as dangerous as earthquakes. Did you know about 10,000 people die each year as a result of earthquakes, that’s a lot of people. While only less than 1,000 people die from earthquakes every year. That’s not a lot compared to the 10,000 people killed by earthquakes. So overall earthquakes are definitely more dangerous than volcanic eruptions.

Side: Earthquakes
3 points

I believe that earthquakes are a lot more dangerous. Unlike volcanoes, earthquakes can occur anywhere but they usually occur around plate boundaries. The most deaths from an earthquake is 316000 and the most from a volcano is only 92,000. That is 3 times less than the death toll from an earthquake. When a volcano erupts you usually have time to get out of the area but with an earthquake but the time you feel it it is already to late. Also earthquakes happen a lot more often than a volcanic eruption. From an earthquake lots of other natural disasters can occur. This information can be proven at http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/world/world_deaths.php

Side: Earthquakes

I agree with Aaron they can happen anywhere. You can see where a volcano is really noticeable. Volcanoes stick out of the ground and you can see them.

Your information is correct, but I have to disagree. While earthquakes are dangerous, people can only be hurt by buildings and buildings can be built to withstand earthquakes. No building can withstand lava. Lava is not the only danger. Volcanoes spew toxic gases that spread for miles. Volcanoes destroy more buildings and harm more humans then earthquakes. http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/hazards/lava/

Everyone knows that earthquakes and volcanoes are both destructive, but when you think about it what’s worse? A volcano or an earthquake, well in my opinion is earthquakes. Earthquakes can happen at any time, rapidly. They happen fast and without warning, volcanos are very dangerous but they go slow enough so you can grab supplies and leave. Volcanos also give you warning by signs they show before an eruption. Thats not always the case volcanos do sometimes show up without warning but very rarely do they. The earthquake that hit Tohoku killed over 15,000 people. Volcanos are destructive but they aren’t as surprising or unpredictable as earthquakes. Earthquakes can set off other disasters such as landslides and tsunami. This is why earthquakes are more dangerous than volcanos.

In my opinion I think a earthquake can be much more hazardous. Albeit It relies entirely on the earthquakes magnitude and a volcanoes size. While an argument can be the fact that an earthquake will do only as much damage as a structure will let It. An earthquake can do things such as landslides, tsunamis to sea/ocean near areas ,and even liquefaction.

And again It relies on It's magnitude. Then we move on to volcanoes. Their power relies so much on It's size and amount of gas and magma. Now lets bring actual history Into the matter. In 1815 the deadliest volcanic eruption occurred. This resulted in about 92,000 deaths and some most of them was due to starvation! Now we move on to earthquakes. It's deadliest occurrence was in 1556 Shaanxi ,China. This event resulted In nearly 830,000 deaths. While I doubt my rambling of a madman had any affect on your stance on this argument, I hope you just consider what I've said. or typed.

I believe earthquakes are more destructive than volcanoes. They can destroy up to 300 miles of land! In 1857, the 7.8 magnitude earthquake on the San Andreas Fault ruptured almost 220 miles from the fault. That's at least 2 miles per second! Earthquakes also cause other natural disasters to happen. Tsunamis for example. When the Earth's tectonic plates move past each other, they cause large earthquakes, which tilt, offset, or displace large areas of the ocean floor from a few kilometers. In 1960, a tsunami was generated by a magnitude 9.5 earthquake that had a rupture zone of over 1,000 km. Its waves were destructive not only in Chile, but also as far away as Hawaii, Japan and other places in the Pacific

Side: Earthquakes

I believe that both earthquakes and volcanoes are both dangerous, but I believe that earthquakes are more dangerous. One main reason for this is because volcanoes can be predicted multiple ways but earthquakes are only detected when they arrive. Volcanoes follow patterns but with an earthquake, it is difficult to predict because it follows no pattern ( http://theory.uwinnipeg.ca/modtech/node194.html ). Also, Earthquakes have caused more damage than volcanoes. Earthquakes damage buildings from the ground shaking, loosening their foundation, through liquefaction (turning the ground to a liquid), from floods they can cause, and from fires they can start ( http://www.geo.mtu.edu/UPSeis/hazards.html ). Lastly, earthquakes have proven to kill more people at once. The number 3 greatest natural disaster was an earthquake in Shaanxi killing 830,000 people and volcanoes isn’t even in the top 10 ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Listofnaturaldisastersbydeathtoll#Tenworstnaturaldisasters ). This is why I believe that earthquakes are more of a danger to us that volcanoes.

Side: Earthquakes

I agree with you Cameron because volcanoes can be predicted while Earthquakes cannot and they can happen in a split second without warning

Side: Earthquakes
3 points

Volcanoes can be dangerous, but when you look at an Earthquake many things can happen at once other than Volcanoes that only have one function and are easily predicted, they also stay dormant for periods of times leaving them harmless. An earthquake is when two sections of earth slide past each other, this can create a fault line which is a giant gap in the group that could possible form under cities and destroy buildings by bringing them under ground and killing possibly hundreds in the process. During an Earthquake in the sea a tsunami could happen and they can go from unnoticeable to devastating, they can destroy boats, buildings, bridges, cars, trees, telephone lines, power lines, and anything else in its way. Just an earthquake itself can destroy and building and bring down bridges depending on the value of it. In 1556 the deadliest earthquake happened in China killing about 830,000 people who lived in caves. Scientist also think that volcanic eruptions and earthquakes are related but some think not, only after a volcanic eruption on November 29, 1975 a small earth quaked happened but scientist are still unsure if they were related. Land slides can also happen, either clumps of dirt and mud can push aside houses and cars or deadly boulders tumbling down with it. These are my reasons that an Earthquake is more powerful than a Volcanic Eruption.

Volcanoes and earthquakes are very disastrous. Earthquakes are more dangerous because they destroy buildings and kill more people than volcanoes do. On average, earthquakes kill 13,298 people per year while volcanoes only kill 869 people per year. That's a difference of 12,429 deaths. Earthquakes are unpredictable and can happen in a split-second which make them more dangerous because you can’t prepare for them. Also, Earthquakes economical damage per year is over 12.1 billion dollars, that's over 351 billion overall! While volcanoes economical damage is less than 100,000 dollars per year. In conclusion, earthquakes are much more dangerous than volcanoes.

We all know that both volcanoes and earthquakes are destructive, but which one is more dangerous. i would say that the earthquakes is far more destructive than a volcano. earthquakes can range very low to mass damage very quickly. yes a volcano can explode and cause ash to linger in the air, but earthquakes can cause landslides and tsunamis. a earthquake most of the time also ranges out much farther than a volcano ever could. earthquakes also cause lots of structural damage too, where volcanoes can but mostly only on ground level. earthquakes are also very unpredictable and can happen at any time or place. this is why earthquakes are much more destructive than volcanoes.

Which is more dangerous-a volcano or an earthquake? Of the two, I believe an earthquake is more precarious. Earthquakes can occur anywhere at any time. Volcanoes can be predicted and the people around it can be evacuated before it erupts. If an earthquake occurs underwater, it can create massive waves called tsunamis which are known to wipe out entire cities to complete obliteration. Landslides, liquefaction, and fires are all disastrous outcomes. Volcanoes erupt lava that can flow over towns but once it hardens nothing else happens. As for an earthquake, after the main quake, a smaller earthquake called an aftershock, happens in the same area as the first and is still very dangerous. Floods can also occur if a dam cracks due to an earthquake. ( sources: http://www.uwiseismic.com/General.aspx?id=14 http://www.geo.mtu.edu/UPSeis/hazards.html )

Side: Earthquakes

Yes, volcanoes are very dangerous but they can come with warning. Earthquakes don’t come with warning and they destroy building and cities. Volcanoes can take years to erupt again. usgs.org says about 320,120 people died from earthquakes in 2010. Earthquakes are also happening more often Live Science says twice as many earthquakes happened in 2014 than in 1979. That means that more and more earthquakes are happening. Earthquakes can also cause tsunamis and landslides which cause even more of a threat. Every day you can hear of an earthquake but it is very rare that you hear of a volcano. Yes it is very rare that earthquakes appear on the news but they happen every day and many people die of earthquakes.

Side: Earthquakes
2 points

I have read a lot of arguments from both sides of the debate and I agree with most of them. Volcanoes are very destructive and they can release deadly gases, but also just for a volcano to erupt, it needs an earthquake to happen. I believe that earthquakes are more dangerous than a volcano. Earthquakes can cause massive destruction to homes, buildings, and anything that it touches. Earthquakes can also have ripple effects. After an earthquake, it can cause massive tsunami's. They can also create landslides, which are huge mounds of dirt and rock that fall downhill at a very fast pace and can completely destroy building and structures that it makes contact with. So in my opinion, I think that earthquakes are more dangerous than volcanoes.

Side: Earthquakes
2 points

Volcanoes and earthquakes can both cause a lot of damage. I feel an earthquake would cause more physical and emotional hurt. According to http://www.cliffsnotes.com/sciences/geology/earthquakes/effects-of-earthquakes can cause extreme structual damage and even fires. Earthquakes are mostly known for destroying many homes when they happen. When this type of thing happens and you lose your home you will most likely feel deep emotional pain for a long time, which is never good. The website http://www2.fiu.edu/~longoria/natural/quake/ says that around 10,000 people die in earthquakes each year, this is a lot compared to the few hundred people killed by volcanoes each year. This may have to do with the fact that earthquakes are more common. Also, the ratio of earthquake disasters a year to volcano disasters a year favors earthquakes as more dangerous.

Side: Earthquakes
2 points

I think that earthquakes are more dangerous than volcanoes because they happen more then volcanic eruptions. Volcanoes can cause more damage and kill more people when they erupt but they rarely erupt as much as earthquakes. In 1906 a earthquake destroyed 375,000 square miles of land. After that an earthquake in Haiti killed an estimated 316,000 people. Also earthquakes can cause large tidal waves to sweep over areas hit with the earthquakes. Those tidal waves alone kill thousands of people alone. Another large issue with large earthquakes is that they can have after shocks so people may think that the earthquake is over and they may go back into a unstable building and when the after shock comes it could make the building gun. Those very dangerous and scary things are why I think volcanoes are more dangerous.

Volcanoes or Earthquakes?

By: Erin Phelps.

This is a tough decision, they are both deadly. If I had two job opportunities and they paid well and they were by a volcano or a place that has deadly earthquakes, I would pick the the earthquakes. Here’s why.

Earthquakes can destroy your house, your valuables, your car, and even your job place. Now you ask if they could destroy your job place why would you want to move there, right? Well, they can always be rebuilt and made sturdier. But sometimes you don't even feel an earthquake.

The reason I wouldn't want to live by a volcano is because they release deadly gasses even before they erupt. you can’t do anything to prevent a volcano to erupt, well at least not today. Also you could be inhaling ash and it get in your lungs, then eventually you could die from the amount of intake. SO that's why I prefer Earthquakes over volcanoes.

Which is more dangerous- an earthquake or a volcano? While earthquakes cause many disastrous incidents every year, volcanoes are at least a triple threat, which makes them ultimately more unfavorable. First, when volcanoes erupt, they explode hot magma which is treacherous and destroys everything in its flow path. Magma is also deleterious before it rises to the surface. Magma movement in the Earth’s mantle causes seismic activity, which can lead to to tremors, earthquakes, and tsunamis. (source: http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/activity/methods/seismic/ )This seismic activity is the second reason volcanic eruptions are more ruinous than earthquakes, and their ensuing results. Volcanic activity can also cause limnic eruption, or lake overturn, which is a rare but calamitous natural event. Limnic eruption is set off by the seismic activity of an active volcano and causes dissolved CO2 to billow out in huge clouds that suffocate humans, wildlife, and livestock. (source: http://www.design4disaster.org/disasters-2/natural-disasters/limnic-eruption/) ) These three dire natural occurrences caused by volcanic eruptions support the thought that they are more menacing than earthquakes.

I must disagree. While volcanoes can do all of those things and be harmful, they can be predicted. Volcanoes are much easier to predict than an earthquake, so this prediction of the volcano could have the area evacuated and then once clean up is done they would be able to come back. http://ezinearticles.com/?Is-It-Easier-To-Predict-Volcanoes-Or-Earthquakes?&id;=5999740 . I also must say that if they were to stay then it would be easier to get away from a volcano flow than an earthquake. Once an earthquake starts then you can't run, you have to just stay there and hope for the best, but with a volcano you have a good chance of escaping the lava flow from many volcanoes having high viscosity levels.

Volcanoes are much more dangerous than earthquakes. Volcano explosions can happen at any time with no warning. You are usually warned when a earthquake is going to take place. Volcanoes are also more deadly than earthquakes. Volcanoes have many lasting effects after the already killing lava flow. The ash cloud of a volcano can kill many people and effect global temperatures. Volcano lava can also cause many forest fires which destroys many valuable food for humans such as fruits and wild game. Co2 levels increasing because because of volcanoes can smother and kill animals and people.

Volcanos are a dramatic hazard on the earth. Not only can they change the land and the ocean but when is explodes its can change the climate of the earth.Volcano also can force people out of there home because of the impending doom of a volcano. Volcano can \ also level out cities and can hurt hundreds or millions of people. A lot of time volcano can hurt people even thought they are far away cause of tephra, ash. Now there are ways of telling when a volcano will attack. I got my information from volcanoes.usgs.gov/hazards/ it help a lot.

Whether it's glowing lava snaking into the sea or lightning blooming in billowing ash clouds, the sight of an erupting volcano inspires awe and wonder.Volcanic gases that pose the greatest potential hazards are sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen fluoride. Locally, sulfur dioxide gas can lead to acid rain and air pollution downwind from a volcano. These gases can come from lava flows as well as a volcano that erupts violently.Volcanic ash can travel hundreds to thousands of miles downwind from a volcano. Fresh volcanic ash is gritty, abrasive, sometimes corrosive, and always unpleasant. Although ash is not highly toxic, it can trouble infants, the elderly, and those with respiratory ailments. Ash can also get in your eyes and scratch them, especially when it's windy.

Earthquakes and volcanoes are both very dangerous and sometimes deadly. However, I believe volcanoes are the more perilous of the two. Volcanoes spew hot lava, rocks, and poisonous gas when they erupt. The hot lava with obliterate anything and anyone in its path. It can also change directions suddenly, and move faster than 40 miles/hour!! The flying rocks and debris will crush and kill anyone that’s left. The ash and gas could remain around for a year or more after it is done erupting, and spread for miles and miles. The extremely high levels of CO2 in the volcano can suffocate anyone around it. This is shown in a process called lake overturn, where CO2 rapidly rises to the surface of a lake and suffocates humans, livestock, and wildlife. This phenomenon is most likely caused by volcanic eruptions. Another danger of volcanoes is that some can grow and spread, making them even more dangerous. An example of this is the stratovolcano Nyiragongo in Africa. Veins of volcanic lava have spread underneath a nearby town and could erupt at any moment. These veins are also giving off CO2, and have the potential to kill many people. Volcanoes are very dangerous, and are much more deadly than earthquakes. Which is more dangerous an Earthquake or a Volcano? I think volcanoes are much more dangerous when they erupt as opposed to an earthquake. From looking at http://www.geo.mtu.edu/volcanoes/hazards/primer/ you can see there are a lot of different hazards coming from volcanoes. There are also many different types of volcanoes. Some, like Mt. St. Helen's give volcanic ash, while others can give fast flowing lava. http://www.fs.usda.gov/mountsthelens Mt St Helen's took down 230 square miles of forest just like many volcanoes can. People live very close to volcanoes in places like Hawaii which is extremely dangerous because of what comes out of the volcanoes. Large numbers of gases like C02 can come from volcanoes which can be deadly. It's because of what can come from volcanoes that I think makes them far more dangerous than earthquakes.

Volcanoes and earthquakes are both very dangerous. Each one can cause mass destruction, and even cause deaths to occur. Volcanoes can cause more deaths to happen because even though earthquakes can destroy buildings, Volcanoes can burn buildings and people. A volcano can pour out dangerous lava, that can move really quickly. This lava can kill people a really fast rates. On the other hand volcanoes can be a beautiful site to see, but it’s not beautiful when you are afraid it can kill you. Both Volcanoes and Earthquakes are very destructive. But, one side always has to win, Right?

Each can cause much destruction… but I believe volcanoes cause the most. Volcanoes erupt Hot lava, poisonous gas, and rocks which can be very troublesome. The high levels of Carbon Dioxide alone can suffocate anyone in its midst in minutes. Krakatoa was a dormant volcano in Indonesia, which awakened and produced one of the biggest volcanic eruptions in 1883. Earthquakes cannot instantaneously kill people like volcanoes. Volcanoes can also force people out of their homes and can even harm those who are far away because of ash clouds. On top of it all, magma movement in the earths mantle can cause many catasrophic results.

I believe that volcanoes are far more dangerous than earthquakes. My first reason to conclude this is because you can build earthquake proof structures that can go under testing. http://www.reidsteel.com/information/earthquake resistantbuilding.htm (See link.) You cannot build a volcano proof structure, as the molten lava would cause too much damage. Volcanic activity can also cause damaging earthquakes and tsunamis. Toxic gases and ash can devastate towns and cities, as it can spread for miles. http://serc.carleton.edu/NAGTWorkshops/health/case studies/volcanicash.html (See link.)

In fact, if the Yellowstone super volcano erupts, about ⅔ of America will be destroyed. It would spew ash that could block out the sun, damage buildings, smother crops, and knock out power systems. The ash clouds could result in freezing temperatures and lack of food sources.

I think volcanoes are more dangerous than earthquakes because if you live close to them you can get burned to death if you don’t here then erupt like if you are in a deep sleep, and a lot of people are deep sleepers. Also the toxic gases in the air when they erupt. All the smoke and ashes fall into the air making it harder to breath. Some say it is like you in a house that's on fire and is filled with smoke. Plus if you get the ashes or smoke in your eyes you can’t see where your going and you might go the wrong way and run into the lava.

Both earthquakes and volcanoes are very dangerous. I think volcanoes are are worse than earthquakes. Although earthquakes occur much more frequently than volcanoes, when volcanoes erupt it can cause very dangerous problems. Volcanoes have a large amount of health problems. They are even deadly. While minor earthquakes are not. Volcanoes can destroy and create land. The lava can melt everything it passes over after the eruption. Humans die from volcanic ash clouds. There are also other gases that can affect your health. Not only can volcanoes kill things, it can also ruin homes, buildings, and much more. I do think earthquakes are very dangerous, I believe Volcanoes are worse.

Both volcanoes and earthquakes are very deadly, and they both rack up a total of deaths. Volcanoes being a eruption of molten rock that spreads then dries, earthquakes being the movements of the plates underneath the surface. There are some things the same about the two, like how both are results of faults in the earth. Volcanoes are many threats in one with magma, ash, and deadly gases. Earthquakes are a large shake and falling buildings.

I side with volcanoes, Volcanoes create ash clouds that block sunlight and can affect health. ( http://education.nationalgeographic.com/ education/encyclopedia/volcanic-ash/?ar_a=1 )Running lava creates fire and burns down towns leaving hundreds homeless. Volcanoes can be hard to tell when they happen also, super volcanoes can erupt without warning. ( wikipedia.org/wiki/Supervolcano ) In the past 500 years, over 200,000 people have lost their lives due to volcanic eruptions. Volcanoes can be exciting, beautiful and fascinating yet they are still very dangerous, any volcano can create a harmful or deadly phenomena.

Side: Volcanoes

I think the volcanoes are more dangerous than earthquakes. Volcanoes are formed under the surface which causes expelling lava, rocks, and smoke. The lava can travel for many miles and at a rapid speed. When the rocks fall down they can cause a serious amount of damage. Just as the smoke leaves it travels far distance. When little kids play in the grass they don't realize that they are being poisoned. The smoke causes acid rain and if the people breath it in they can get really sick and some could die. Another effect is that the volcano fumes can cover up the sun , without the sun there is no plants. Without the plants there is no animals and humans will eventually become extinct.

I think that volcanoes are more dangerous. Volcanoes create magma in which can be rapidly released onto the surface. Lava is burning hot and has the ability to burn people, objects, buildings, and more. volcanoes can cause overall a lot of destruction. some villages and towns are next to volcanoes, and volcanoes are a huge threat to them and their village because the volcanoe could erupt at any time. Volcanoes are a constant threat to not only villages nearby, it could destroy a forest or possible burn something nearby that could start a very big fire. I think volcanoes are more dangerous than earthquakes.

This is a very hard debate because both Earthquakes and Volcanoes are very dangerous. If i had a choice as to live some place with volcanoes or earthquakes, I would pick the place with earthquake. I would pick a place with earthquakes because they don’t have the ability to melt your skin right off your bones. Volcanoes are way more dangerous than earthquakes. For example: they push out molten lava at very high speeds and they can also push out very dense smoke that could make your lungs collapse right on the spot. I would rather be smashed by a falling building than be burned alive by molten lava. You may even survive being almost crushed by falling debris in a earthquake. With volcanoes you have no chance of surviving being burned alive. I do not know what you would choose but for me, volcanoes are way more dangerous than earthquakes. http://www.uwiseismic.com/General.aspx?id=14 http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-01-22/mexicos-spectacular-colima-volcano-eruption/6033332

I support volcanoes, because they are mountains filled with boiling lava. Volcanoes are more deadly because of the magma that is always building up inside of the volcano. Volcanoes can erupt in two ways it can explode, or flow like a rapid river. Volcanoes have tubes or channels underground that travel down and carry magma with them. Volcanoes can be dormant, active, or extinct. The most lethal volcanoes are super-volcanoes, an example is Yellowstone, Wyoming. The volcanoes are more deadly because of disastrous outcomes, such as they are uncontainable. When a volcano erupts it spreads for a 20 to 30 mile radius. Earthquake v. Volcano

Dustin Forest Abner

1-20(23)-2015

Mrs. Weaver

My personal opinion on this case, is that Volcanoes are much more dangerous. The reason I think this is because a Volcano can cause an Earthquake. However the Earthquake occurs after the magma, ash, etc has spread and destroyed the landscape. Pompeii? No? Well look it up. The Magma erupted unknowingly, randomly, and swallowed the whole city. Why people today, and back then continue to build cities, forts, castles, trade routes, and towns around Volcanoes still amazes me. Why would you build next to one of the most destructive forces.

Here’s my evidence…

Pompeii of course. You can even watch the movie. Actually don’t. Heard the song? Yeah listen to that. First you’ll hear some sort of demonic chanting then this guy tells the story of his boring life… Then the walls came tumbling down… Don’t close your eyes. Umm… Yeah.

Okay, next we have Mount Vesuvius. No? Okay here’s the story… People yet again build a city next to an enormous volcano. The only change is that this volcano showed signs of erupting. In fact people could have probably evacuated but no, once again the indigenous people of 79AD continue to live by a giant mountain of doom (Lord of The Rings). Actually 17 years earlier (I’m giving Earthquakes credit here) a massive Earthquake swept over the lovely lands of Italy… It probably was a great sign of an impending eruption, but no. Lets continue to live next to a giant death machine.

Things not to walk towards in a volcano eruption:

Magma, Ash, Spewing Strips of Magma, and Giant chunks of land hurling towards you. Good? Okay.

This is not a case of, “If we live 100 feet away we’ll die. 100.5 feet is fine.” No, you’ll probably die on the matter. (Hawaii is okay, because… Who doesn’t like Hawaii?)

Take this for example… Eyjafjallajökull in Reykjavik, Iceland. Yes, I did have to copy and paste this. Also be happy we weren’t around any volcanoes in 2010. If you did your research, you know why. Stromboli in Stromboli, Italy. Yes the entire city is named after the volcano because that’s what it’s about to be an enormous plot of land now owned to Mr. Stromboli himself. Volcano King. Volcanoes cause Earthquakes, Magma spills, Projectiles, Extreme danger, and impending danger. If a volcano is about to erupt you better hope Usain Bolt is strong enough to carry you. Actually because I am listening to music on Youtube, it has come to my attention that a Volcano is in the shape of a triangle… Anything else you know? Illuminati much? Possession of volcanoes in the hands of an illuminati person. Yes it comes back into play, IMPENDING DOOM

We all know which is more dangerous, obviously a volcano. Volcanoes let out a huge explosion, that shoots out magma, ash, and poisonous gas like CO2. All of these things can kill you very quickly. Yes, some might say that you could run away from lava. I am here to tell you wrong, lava can travel as fast as 60 mph! Name one person that can run that fast. That's not all either! Just at Mt. St. Helen's, the ash traveled 390 square kilometers!!! If you are three states away you could still get hit!!! http://volcano.oregonstate.edu http://www.sveurop.org/

Earthquakes and volcanoes are both very deadly. Earthquakes can rupture structures and overturn highways. Volcanoes can burn entire cities. If I were to chose one, however, I would say volcanoes are more destructive and dangerous. It depends on what type of eruption occurs and where the volcano is that determines just how dangerous it is. If it’s in the middle of the city, it could ravage and destroy homes and businesses. Even when it’s hundreds of miles away, the lava can still reach the city. Not to mention the fissures that snake out of the volcano. As claytons and rosettab mentioned in their posts, toxic gas leaks out of the volcano and suffocates people, regardless if it’s an eruption or not. He also mentioned the ash. Ash clouds could block warmth from the sun thus putting the earth in an unnatural cold. This happened once before. It was the coldest summer ever.

Now others may argue that earthquakes are more dangerous by saying that volcano eruptions can not be harmful to people if they are warned in time and can evacuate. That may be true, but the place where the lava reaches will be ravaged and cannot be restored without complete reconstruction. So that is why volcanoes are more dangerous.

I think that volcano's are more dangerous than earthquakes. Volcanoes can destroy things A LOT quicker than earthquakes do. Volcano's destroy anything and everything that is in their way. If you're caught in a volcano erupting you have a slim chance of surviving. But with earthquakes , you can move places or get to a safer spot quicker. A volcano can move up to 40 miles per hour. I don't know anyone that can move that fast! Volcano's are very quick & dangerous.

Earthquakes and volcanoes both do an enormous amount of damage while in my personal opinion I believe that volcanoes are a little more dangerous than earthquakes because volcanoes have a few long term low key impacts, for example when the volcano erupts and the ash cloud may spur across the sky it will impact the crops and water sources for many years it may also cause a series of problems that has a domino effect on each other. But when comparing death counts both have done some major damage here are some real examples comparing volcanoes and earthquakes.

Earthquakes can happen almost anywhere although most people don't actually die from the quake they die from the falling debris and erupting gas lines.

In my opinion I think volcanoes are more powerful than earthquakes, volcanoes have killed more than a quarter million people. Both have its own effect, but if talk in a broader way we know valcanoes are extincted from current world whereas we still face earthquake in massive number in countries like japan.

But still i think volcanoes are more destructive than earthquakes,in earthquake we still have a oppurtunity to survive.we can use many different surviving technique once earthquake started, like hiding under a table or standing in a corner or even going to open place.

But once volcanoe started we have no choice if we are in range there is no option of survival.we cant take shelter anywhere,it causes massive destruction.

Animals cant even sense it and have to face it till death,it even clears the whole forest situated in its range.

(source: http://www.design4disaster.org/disasters-2/natural-disasters/limnic-eruption/) ) ) These three dire natural occurrences caused by volcanic eruptions support the thought that they are more menacing than earthquakes.
